Direct Care Workers and the Future of Long Term Care

A Series of Forums on the Emerging Crisis in Caregiving, and What's at Stake for All of Us.

In June 2004, the Iowa CareGivers Association (ICA) conducted four public forums throughout the State on issues related to the increasing demand for direct care workers, on problems in recruitment and retention, and on the implications of these issues for the on-going debate over the future of long term care in Iowa. The principal purpose of the forums was two-fold: to educate consumers and the general public, providers, and direct care workers; and to solicit input from various stakeholder groups on their views of how the issues affected them, and the values they considered most important in the design of the State’s caregiving system. A secondary purpose was to encourage participants to think about steps they might take themselves, to become part of “the solution.”

Best Practices for Recruitment and Retention of Nurses and Nursing Assistive Personnel

From October 2002 through July 2004, the Center for Health Workforce Planning funded seven demonstration projects with the intent of identifying successful recruitment and retention strategies for replication across Iowa. Several of the projects have created manuals, reports and Power Point presentations which share their findings and provide useful strategies for other employers and associations to implement.

You can view the manuals, reports and Power Point presentations by going to the Center for Health Workforce Planning's
Best Practices for Recruitment and Retention of Nurses and Nursing Assistive Personnel web page where you can also download the Best Practices Report. Additional information related to the health workforce may be accessed from the center's home page.
